Fellowship is a way of honoring the outstanding research contributions of our members, contributions which help keep IMS in a leading role in the field of statistics and probability. Each newly elected Fellow will be welcomed and presented with a plaque at the IMS Annual Meeting during the Joint Scientific Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, USA. The presentation and reception will take place at the IMS Presidential Address on Monday, August 8 at 8:00 p.m. It would be wonderful if you would be able to attend this ceremony of welcome and presentation. I very much look forward to meeting you there. I would be grateful if you could send the enclosed form to the IMS Executive Director, Elyse Gustafson. With warm congratulations and very best wishes, Sincerely, Louis HY Chen President Institute of Mathematical Statistics ========================================================================= NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release, August 31, 2005 CONTACT: Elyse Gustafson, erg@imstat.org JEFFREY S. ROSENTHAL NAMED IMS FELLOW Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, Professor, University of Toronto, was named Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). The induction ceremony took place August 8, 2005 at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Professor Rosenthal received the award for outstanding contributions to the theory and practice of Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms, to the study of geometric ergodicity, and coupling algorithms, and for original contributions to substantive applied problems. Each Fellow nominee is assessed by a committee of his/her peers for the award. In 2005, after reviewing 32 nominations, 15 were selected for Fellowship. Created in 1933, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics is a member organization which fosters the development and dissemination of the theory and applications of statistics and probability. The IMS has 4100 active members throughout the world.
